Our industry
Finsia connects more than 20,000 members across the entire spectrum of financial services in Australasia and the world. Our members fall into three broad categories:
Banking & finance
Finsia members are widely represented across all aspects of traditional banking practices, from payment and settlement services, deposit-taking and lending, for example, to the issuing of debt securities such as banknotes and bonds. Given the depth and diversification of Australasia’s large banks, many ‘bank’ employees perform ‘non-traditional’ banking roles, such as providing financial planning advice to bank customers and securities fundraising for corporate clients.
Capital markets
Finsia members raise capital for both corporate and individual clients by structuring and ‘floating’ new securities on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX), New Zealand Stock Exchange (NZX) and other exchanges. They also manage their client’s wealth by trading securities on-market and in ‘over-the-counter’ transactions by hedging risk with futures and options. Members commonly work in large corporate finance teams of investment banks or ‘in-house’ for ASX/NZX 200 companies, managing risk exposures. They can also be found working for hedge funds,
boutique consultancies and independently as stockbrokers and valuation experts.
Wealth management
Australasia’s A$1 trillion+ funds management industry employs Finsia members in diverse roles including financial planning, portfolio analysis and asset consultancy, as well as equity research, estate planning and private banking, to name a few. There are a variety of investment structures, including superannuation, life insurance and managed funds, which employ Finsia members in ‘finance roles’ alongside members who are also qualified as accountants, lawyers and actuaries.
