Student membership

 

Student membership provides students who are looking to build a career in financial services with an invaluable connection to the industry at an early stage of their career development.

Eligibility

To be eligible for student membership you need to be a full time student studying a finance-related qualification at a recognised tertiary institute. Student membership is free for a maximum number of 3 years or to the expiry of your student ID, whichever date comes first.

Definition of a full time student

To qualify for Finsia student membership, a students' study load must be recognised by their own tertiary institute as full-time for an entire academic year.

As a guide:

Australia
A full-time study load is defined as a minimum of 3 subjects in a compulsory semester/teaching period for a full academic year for higher education programs (degree level and above).

New Zealand
For New Zealand students, you must have an EFTS (equivalent full-time student) of 0.8 EFTS over a minimum number of 32 weeks.

Definition of a finance-related qualification

Finsia defines a finance-related qualification as a qualification that prepares a student for a career in a primary tier position within the financial services industry.

Financial services refer to services provided by the finance industry. The finance industry encompasses a broad range of organisations that deal with the management of money and includes firms that are engaged in banking, insurance, securities brokerage, investment banking, securities trading, investment or money management, securities analysis and financial planning. Among these organisations are banks, credit card companies, insurance companies, consumer finance companies, stock brokerages, investment funds and some government sponsored enterprises.

Subjects such as business, finance, economics, and accounting professional practices prepare students on general knowledge necessary as a professional in the above fields. Further examples of subjects include: Banking and Finance, Accounting, Commercial Law, Economics, Econometrics, Law, Mathematics, and Statistics, Financial Management, Management Accounting, Taxation, Auditing, Banking, Corporate Finance, Economics, International Finance, Investment and Portfolio Management, Financial and Estate Planning, Risk Management, Corporate Finance, Financial Risk Management, Funds Management and Instruments / Valuations.

How to become a student member

Apply online, or alternatively download and complete the application form.

Proof of full time study

You will need to provide proof of full time study on application. Either; a copy of your student ID which shows your full time status, your enrolment form or a letter confirming you are a full time student from your tertiary provider.

Post nominals and voting rights

Student membership does not confer post nominals or voting rights.
