Special session of The Regulators to define the future with FINSIA

by Lewis Panther | 15 May 2020
FINSIA’s special session of The Regulators is testimony to the organisation’s standing at the heart of banking and financial services.

CEO and Managing Director Chris Whitehead also said the webinar will give members an ideal opportunity to hear directly from the most senior executives at the RBA, APRA and ASIC.

Wayne Byres, Chair, Australian Prudential Regulatory Authority; Philip Lowe, Governor, Reserve Bank of Australia and James Shipton, Chair, Australian Securities and Investment Commission will be taking part in next Thursday’s event.

It will follow the same format as the traditional face-to-face The Regulators lunch with presentations followed by a Q&A.

“We are particularly pleased to be holding a special online session of The Regulators to deal with the unprecedented times we are living through,” said Mr Whitehead Chartered Banker F FIN.

“Bringing forward our traditional November lunch that looks forward to the following year is a logical step given the way COVID-19 has turned the economy on its head.

“That the banks, the RBA, ASIC and APRA are already working incredibly hard to ensure customers - both business and consumers - do not face unnecessary hardship and potentially disastrous consequences is already evident.

“But this is a fast evolving situation, and it will be fascinating to hear directly from all three.

“It will also be a great opportunity for all our members, from customer-facing staff to senior executives, to hear directly and have the chance to put their own questions forward.

“The fact that they have chosen to give FINSIA this important update highlights the important role our organisation is playing in banking and financial services.

“So I hope you will take the time to join us next week for what is bound to be an enthralling webinar.”
The Regulators is usually held in the final quarter of the year when  senior executives of the Reserve Bank of Australia, APRA and ASIC highlight their priorities for the coming year.

Who could have predicted on 15 November, less than 6 months ago, how much our world would have changed due to the impact of COVID19 on society and on our economy,” added Mr Whitehead.

“Clearly the priorities of our regulators have had to change to help meet the challenges we now face.

“There is of course the same demand and enormous interest from our members to understand the priorities and the perspectives of our regulators. We are delighted therefore that our Regulators at the most senior level have agreed to provide us with an update, given such significant change in circumstances.

“Whilst our normal format is a lunch, for obvious reasons this will be delivered by a webinar on this occasion. We will adopt our usual format with each regulator presenting, to be followed with a “Q and A” panel. As usual we will also register key media representatives, who may ask questions, however we will ensure members questions are amongst those addressed.”
