The Professional Banking Fundamentals is considered the minimum qualification for all people working in banking.

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:

  • Explain the purpose, influences and functions of banking in New Zealand;
  • Explain the importance of high standards of ethical conduct in banking and the practicalities of applying those standards.
  • Understand how key regulatory and legal requirements influence the way in which banks operate;
  • Describe how banking products and services can meet customer needs;
  • Understand the key principles of credit and consumer lending and how these are used to provide appropriate outcomes for the customers and the bank;
  • Describe the role of risk and risk management in banking;

Course Duration

On average it takes 3 to 6 months to complete. The self-paced study and blended learning options mean you can gain the qualification with only a few hours of study per week.

Knowledge Checks

Designed to reinforce key concepts plus a practice assessment.

Final Assessment

The final assessment is a 75-minute online test with 60 multiple-choice questions and is supervised using record and review functionality.

What do I get when I finish the course?

Graduating from the Professional Banking Fundamentals qualification entitles you to the G FIN post nominal, demonstrating your commitment to your career and ongoing professional development.

To retain post nominals students need to remain FINSIA member and to complete 14 hours CPD per year, 10 of which is structured, 4 unstructured and a minimum of 1 hour in ethics and integrity (as part of the structured learning).
